You are doing an internship, you have a small job or you do research
If you are doing an internship, have a small job or do research, you may be insured under the Wlz scheme.
Internship
You are insured under the Wlz scheme if you do an internship for which you receive an allowance of more than:
- €2.50 an hour if you are under 23, or €4.50 an hour if you are 23 or over; or
- €150 per month; or
- €1,500 per year
If you do not have the nationality of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, the following is also important:
- the internship must be a compulsory part of your study programme, and
- the employer must have concluded an internship agreement with you and the educational institution

Small job
If you have come to the Netherlands to study and decide to work in addition to your studies, you will be insured under the Wlz scheme, regardless of how many hours you work or how much you earn.
Research
If you have come to the Netherlands as a PhD student (with or without a scholarship) and you do research, you will be insured under the Wlz scheme if you:
- do scientific research on the basis of a supervision agreement, and
- you have an attendance requirement and are scheduled to teach classes, and
- you need to ask permission from the university if you want to work somewhere else, and
- you receive instructions from your supervisor, and
- the intellectual property rights related to your thesis are owned by the university, and
- you receive compansation directly from the Dutch university
If you receive a European or international scholarship, you will not be in an employment relationship with the Dutch university and not be insured under the Wlz scheme, unless you are considered a resident of the Netherlands.

You are a student researcher (aio) in the Netherlands
If you are a student researcher (aio) and you receive a salary, you will be insured under the Wlz scheme.
